What's a bike frame?
The bike frame is the skeleton of any bike. It supports the other components such as the wheels, saddle, handlebars, and pedals.
The frame is usually built from aluminium, steel, or carbon fibre, and it plays a crucial role in the overall performance and handling of the bike. Plus, it's the frame that determines the rider's position and ergonomics — like an upright position for comfort or a more aerodynamic position for speed.
The frame size, shape, and material affect the bike's weight, stiffness, and ride quality. In our collection of WorldTour-approved bike frames, shop for different styles created to suit all types of riding — from road biking and touring bikes to gravel biking and commuting.
What is a bike frameset?
A bike frameset is a set that includes the bicycle frame and the fork (the part that attaches the front wheel to your bike).
A complete frameset includes the main frame, the fork, and the headset (which connects the fork to the frame and allows you to steer the handlebars). Some framesets include the bottom bracket or seat post, too.
Framesets are usually sold separately from other bike components, such as wheels, pedals, and handlebars. This lets advanced riders choose their own components and totally tailor their bike to their riding style.
How to measure a bike frame
To measure a bike frame, you'll need a flexible measuring tape. It's helpful to also have a frame-size chart or a sizing tool so you can choose the right frame based on your height.
When measuring a bike frame, look at the following measurements:
- Seat tube length — This is the length of the tube holding the seat post. Measure it from the centre of the bottom bracket (where the pedals attach) to the top of the seat tube.
- Top tube length — This is the length of the tube that connects the seat tube to the head tube (where the handlebars attach). Measure it horizontally from the centre of the seat tube to the centre of the head tube.
- Head tube length — This is the length of the tube that holds the headset and connects the fork to the frame. Measure it from the bottom of the head tube to the top.
- Standover height — This is the distance from the ground to the top of the top tube. Measure it from the centre of the top tube.
- Wheelbase — This is the distance between the front and rear axles. Measure it from the centre of the front axle to the centre of the rear axle.
