Stay stylish and protected on two wheels with the best cycling helmets

Let’s face it — accidents happen. The good news is that protecting your brain doesn't involve wearing a bulky block of plastic anymore.

Nowadays, bike helmets have stepped up and meld functionality with super-sleek designs. That means you can find a helmet with a comfortable fit that's lighter, more breathable and fits perfectly to your skull.

All the while giving you the confidence (and protection) to bike hard.

Which bike helmet should you buy?

When shopping for a bike helmet, there are several things to consider:

  1. Size
  2. Ventilation
  3. Weight
  4. Strength and protection

Bicycle helmet size

Your bicycle helmet must fit properly and comfortably on your head. The last thing you want is a helmet that slides down over your eyes or flies off with the first gust of wind when you're downhill mountain biking.

Make sure that you can adjust the fit of whatever style of helmet you choose.

To find your head circumference, wrap a tape measure around the largest portion of your head — about 2.5 cm above your eyebrows.

Most average adult head sizes are between 51-64 centimetres.

Bicycle helmet ventilation

Running late to work? The last thing you want is sweat flopping over your laptop when you finally do arrive.

A well-ventilated bicycle helmet has helmet vents that allow heat to escape from your head. This keeps you from overheating (very dangerous). And you'll stay cool in the summer and able to focus on the road, not sweat dripping in your eyes.

If you ride in colder weather, helmet ventilation is still important. Trapped heat and moisture won't do you any favours. Wear a cycling cap or a headband for extra warmth.

Bicycle helmet weight

Go for a lightweight helmet that won't slow you down, reducing the risk of neck injuries in the event of an impact, such as a crash or fall.

Go for a lightweight bike helmet made of materials like carbon. Carbon helmets provide robust and high-quality protection for your head, even in the event of hard blows at high speeds. Depending on how tightly the fibres are woven, the stronger and lighter the racing helmet will be.

Choose MIPS for a strong and safe bicycle helmet

When you start hunting for your new favourite bike helmet, you'll probably come across the term 'MIPS'.

MIPS or the 'Multi-Directional Impact Protection System' is an innovative technology that acts as a shock absorber and reduces the impact on the head.

It allows the helmet to move and absorb the impact, reducing the risk of serious head injuries and providing a much-needed level of safety.

If you're going to cycle on busy roads, a MIPS helmet is something to consider.

Advantages of MIPS:

  • Adds extra protection against head impact — both linear and rotational forces
  • The movable inner layer reduces the potential damage to the brain and head
  • Minimizes the risk of concussion and neurological injuries

Aerodynamic bike helmets

Don't let the futuristic design of an aero helmet (short for aerodynamic bike helmet) fool you. They're packed with the protection that keeps top bike racers safe.

Characterized by their elongated, egg-shaped design with an integrated visor, aero helmets are designed to minimize wind resistance and increase speed.
