FSA makes carbon fiber stems, but the OS-99 is arguably its greatest stem (despite not being the most exotic or expensive). Unbelievably, the OS-99, the lightest stem in the FSA series, is constructed from 7050 aluminium alloy.
The OS-99 is produced by FSA utilizing a unique 3D forging method that uses low forging rates and very high pressures to completely remove surface distortion. To achieve optimal crystal formation, the heat treatment process is meticulously controlled. As the heat treatment is so important to the final product, FSA records and examines each heat treatment session to guarantee quality. Although it could be really light, it is robust and durable.
Both alloy and carbon fiber handlebars can be fixed securely to the forged face-plate, which includes a serrated grip area. Even the washers and counterbores for the Ti bolts have been designed to improve stress flow, removing any potential stress risers. To more evenly distribute the clamping stress across the steerer tube, the clamping region is also sliced diagonally.
